Making Money for Websites

Blogs and many websites started out as fun ways for ambitious journalist, hobbiest, and the early adopters with a voice to show their stuff and make a name for themselves. What started as a hobby for many, has turned into a lucrative profession for some.

Not surprisingly, many people have looked for ways to profit from their dialogue and content.

Sponsorship
Many site owners profit by having companies related to the content sponsor the the site in it’s entirety. Sponsors might also sponsor specific themed pages or segments for a fixed fee.

Sponsorship is usually indicated by an audio or video advertisement ro prominent placement throughout the page or site. video can also be inserted into site to raise revenue, similar to what would be seen as a television commercial but turned into a webmercial.

Advertisements in Blog posts or reviews

Many bloggers who regularly review new products, have started taking fees for the reviews. This has caused some concern of the validity of the review since in essence it was purchased. However, many site owners are being transpearent during the review by stating it was sponsored.

Others have started to place links within the post and reviews. These link themselves can be purchased by advertiser related to the topic or review.

Others again have placed Google adwords or similiar ads near above or below each post, review or article.

Subscription Sites
One of the most succesful business models onthe internet is the membership based model. If you have unque and valuable content to provide that is not easily obtained in other places then creating a membership based site can be profitable. Based on a monthly fee the site is able to generate predictable income, allowing for sustained and controlled growth. The site is able to feed it’s own success, more subscribers means more revenue, means more marketing dollars and staff to add content meaning more subscribers.

The key is unique and valuable content. MAny newpaper sites have tried the membership based model and failed. News is a commodity avialable everywhere, and though it is valuable it is NOT unique.

Offer a product for sale.
Many sites will create a product based on the theme of their site. If doen correctly this method again can work well. It can be downloaded or a simply as a T-shirt, if the audience is passionate about the topic this method can work well. Again passion or novelty is the key to this model’s success

Other models exist, and the web is still evolvign, you may need to test different models to find what works for your site.
