The Myth of ‘Marketer’s Entitlement’
Posted on April 20, 2008 | Filed Under Business Management, Motivation, Productivity
One of the most important marketing lessons I’ve learned
recently came from Eben Pagan, founder of Double Your
Dating (dating advice for men), and the Altitude Program
(marketing and business coaching).
Since he created a 20 million dollar a year corporation in
less than 6 years, I take his advice pretty seriously.
The lesson I wanted to share with you has to do with the
interesting human quirk known as entitlement.
They may not say it aloud, but through their actions and
habits you can tell that they feel entitled to wealth,
success, and happiness. They think it’s “not fair” if
hardships, the economy, or any other obstacle pops up to
take what’s rightfully theirs.
People naturally want to believe that there is a gigantic
scoreboard in the sky that will balance the justices with
the injustices. That there is a celestial, or Infinite
Justice System at work.
Anyone with even a little bit of experience in business
knows this is far from the truth.
But there are 2 ways to think about this.
***As an entrepreneur***
If you didn’t already know, there is no celestial
scoreboard making sure that for every hardship that comes
your way, you will also get a “free lunch”.
You could go through failure after failure before finally
achieving moderate success. Then you may have to go through
another bunch of failures until you reach your goal.
Here’s your wake up call. There are no freebies. There are
no free lunches.
The vitally important thing to take away from this article
is to, once and for all, turn off that portion of your
brain that thinks you are entitled to ANYTHING. Because you
aren’t. Nobody is. And when you shut entitlement off you
quickly realize that you can’t wait for the non existent
Infinite Justice System to deliver fame and fortune to you.
You’ve got to do something about it as well. You have to
start taking steps to CREATE successful opportunities for
yourself.
***You as a marketer***
It’s important to understand how to deal with entitlement
on a personal level. It’s also important to understand how
to USE entitlement when communicating with your prospects.
If you can position your product or service so that it
BECOMES the swift hand of entitlement in the Infinite
Justice System - meaning - if you can give your prospects
what they secretly and most ardently desire (but rarely
get) - you can tap into an extraordinarily powerful buying
emotion.
When your prospects read about your product or service and
think THIS is the break they’ve been waiting for, and NOW I
can get rich, NOW I can become more beautiful, NOW I can
become famous… well then you’re well on your way to
creating your own success.
