How to Cure Entrepreneurial Insomnia

Do you ever get so excited about the opportunities and
ideas that exist in the business world that you can’t get a
good night’s sleep? If you’re an entrepreneur, chances are
you’ve had these types of sleepless nights.

Sometimes I’ll actually BE in bed, tossing and turning,
and finally just give up, turn on the light, and get back
on the ‘Net. Seems logical right? Well this type of
behavior can be detrimental to both your mental and
physical health.

Plus, I’m naturally a night owl, so my brain functions best
once the sun goes down. The bottom line is, the sun is
often rising when I finally get tired enough to get some
sleep.

Want to talk about consequences? The next day becomes a
dazed, dream state, where many times a nap is required to
be even partially functional. So how does an entrepreneur
combat this problem?

A few days ago I was talking to one of my friends, a
wealthy entrepreneur and film producer, who seems to
constantly pop out great ideas, and is still one of the
most energetic people I know. And he told me that he had
the same problem I have, up until a few years ago.

Now, whenever he gets a rush of great ideas while lying in
bed (and knows he needs a decent night’s sleep), he simply
puts a notebook on the nightstand next to him. Then he
tries to get some rest.

Of course a million different thoughts will start coursing
through his brain. So at this point, he simply turns over,
reaches for his notebook, and writes down the ideas that
are percolating at that moment. Then he lies back down.
Sounds simple, right? And how is this helpful, you may be
asking?

According to my friend, who is an expert in human
psychology, there are two reasons why this is helpful.
First of all, for most people, bed time is probably the
first time in a busy entrepreneur’s day that they get to
actually be alone with their thoughts.

That is, you aren’t on the phone, you aren’t writing copy,
and you aren’t tweaking your website(s). So your
subconscious mind takes this time to relax… and push a
torrent of ideas into your head. And then you get excited
and can’t sleep.

Second, these ideas aren’t just any ideas. They are known
as “open loops” in Neuro Linguistic Programming. Basically
they are incomplete ideas because they are not immediately
actionable. You are just lying in bed thinking about all
the ideas you COULD be implementing. Is it any wonder you
can’t sleep?

So when you use the notebook to write your incomplete ideas
down you are actually closing that open loop in a concrete
fashion. You are telling your subconscious mind, “Hey, we
got it on paper. Don’t worry. We can take care of it in the
morning. You can rest, okay?”

Practice this until your mind comes to peace, knowing that
all those great ideas won’t be forgotten sometime in the
night. Plus, when you can get a good night’s rest, you will
be able to IMPLEMENT all those ideas from your notebook
with the passion and energy they deserve!
